GLO-LO Video Corpus Part 3 (vocational education)
Description
GLO-LO Video Corpus Part 3 is part of a broader Video Corpus of talk and interaction collected as part of the research project Globalizing construction work and local language practices. The project investigates local language practices at construction sites in Finland and analyses how construction workers coordinate their work tasks by using linguistic and bodily resources. The research method used is conversation analysis. The results of the project provide new insights into the role of language in the organization of physical and manual work.
GLO-LO Video Corpus Part 3 includes video recordings collected at a vocational school for adults. There are 24 participants in the data set, and most of them are second language users of Finnish with different language backgrounds. They take part in an educational program preparing them for vocational education. In the program, they study construction skills and Finnish language at the same time.
The data set consists of videorecording of the students engaged in small tasks such as building shelters and fences and painting them. Part of the data set is collected at a renovation site in which a private house is renovated by the vocational school students and their vocational teacher (in construction).
The video recordings were done between June and September 2021, on 21 different days. The interactions were captured using one to two hand-held cameras. Altogether the corpus includes approximately 46 hours of video recordings (approximately 500 GBs). The recordings are supplemented by ethnographic fieldnotes written by the researchers who recorded the interactions.
