Church of the Holy Cross, Rauma

Church of the Holy Cross, Rauma

Description

The medieval wall paintings of the former Franciscan convent church in Rauma (Satakunta), now known as the Church of the Holy Cross. The paintings are dated between 1510 to 1522. Only the paintings in the chancel area remain and they were heavily overpainted during restauration in 1891. At that time, explanatory texts in Finnish were also added. The overpainted images have been left in their current form as an evidence of the restauration ideals of the late 19th century.
