Artificial Intelligence Guided Diagnostics in Medical Imaging: Oulu Dataset of Screening Mammography

Description

This dataset contains 49,634 mammography screening studies (from 22,739 unique patients) which were conducted over the 2011-2019 period within the City of Oulu, Oulu, Finland, catchment area for specialized medical care. The dataset has been collected for research purposes, with a special interest in conducting research on artificial intelligence-based methodologies for breast cancer detection and diagnostics. Screening data, namely digital screening mammograms from the picture archive and communication system and their corresponding mammographic information system data in a machine-readable form, was collected from an existing registry in late 2019 after receiving a register-based study permit from the Northern Ostrobothnia Hospital District (179/2019), Oulu, Finland, and the City of Oulu (35/2019), Oulu, Finland. The dataset was collected as a partial fulfillment of Artificial Intelligence Guided Diagnostics in Medical Imaging (AIDMEI) project. The project received funding from the Future Makers Funding Program of the Technology Industries of Finland Centennial Foundation and the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation. Moreover, the dataset was collected in co-operation with Oulu University Hospital, Oulu, Finland. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women, with approximately 2.3 million new cases yearly according to Global Cancer Statistics 2020. Screening mammography can be considered the best method for early detection of the disease.
