Digital nomadism: Life-style mobilities, nation-state and the mobile subject

Description of the granted funding

This project examines the rising form of life-style mobility, digital nomadism, that has come about as a result of technology and increased free movement. Although considered a temporary life-stage, the phenomenon is rapidly becoming more normalised with the digitalisation of work. This project analyses digital nomads' experiences and perceptions concerning mobility as a life-style, and how they construct social relations, family-life, identity and leisure on the move. This life-style renders visible how our understanding of “desirable life” in postindustrial societies is constructed on the premise of being sedentary. The project's data includes interviews and observation collected in co-working spaces in Thailand, Finland, Scotland and Estonia, an online survey and social media material. The study sheds light to the intersections between mobility, work and digitalisation in the ever-globalising world, and what role the changing nation-state plays in their regard.
