Graphic Justice - Comic Contracts in Social Welfare

Description of the granted funding

The Graphic Justice – Comic Contracts in Social Welfare project aims to determine whether comic-style communication can facilitate the comprehension of social welfare documents, especially among readers who – due to their limited language skills or cognitive conditions – are at the risk of not being able to apprehend complex, institutional texts. In other words, we examine if comic-style communication may be used to improve the accessibility of these documents. In addition, we want to find out how a comic could be legally binding public document. The Graphic Justice project produces new understanding and knowledge about the benefits and disadvantages of using comics as contracts. At its best, a comic contract could encourage reader participation, produce covert persuasion, facilitate intercultural communication and benefit underprivileged audiences to access their social rights.
