Discovering safe cleaning for school buildings to reduce harmful chemical, particle and microbial footprint (CleanSchool).

Description of the granted funding

The aim of this multi-disciplinary research project is to shed light on the impacts of cleaning in schools on exposure to harmful chemical and microbiological impurities. We will conduct a questionnaire survey to recognize commonly used cleaning agents and to explore how the cleaning practices involving these chemicals is related to symptom reports in schools. Laboratory and chamber tests will be used to investigate emissions and the toxicological potential of cleaning chemicals. Simulations and optimisation of ventilation automation aims to minimize cleaning associated exposure. We will implement a cleaning intervention study in classrooms including a broad field monitoring campaign to test approaches that aim at limiting harmful exposures. Based on the results of the research, we will formulate recommendations on cleaning methods, cleaning agents and ventilation optimization to reduce exposure. The results will be applicable not only to schools, but also to other public buildings.
