Reliable Elastic Electronics - REEL

Description of the granted funding

Stretchable electronics is a new class of electronic systems which typically are very thin, have large area, are durable against stretching, conform to curved surfaces, and are cheap to manufacture. Currently the reliability of the technology is not good enough to be utilized in typical use cases. The objective of the project is to increase the reliability of stretchable electronics significantly. Stretchable electronic systems are designed as matrices of electronic devices attached on elastic film. The research has adopted three basic principles as commonly agreed good practices. 1) Elastomer films are used as substrates for realizing circuits on top, 2) division of the area to rigid areas (islands) with inelastic circuits and 3) stretchable areas with elastic interconnections. The project will focus on the interfaces between those three areas and aims to solve problems in their mutual compatibility.
