Resilient Distributed Optimization for Cyber-Physical Systems
Description of the granted funding
Advances in networking and information technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT) hold great potential for transformational change for cities and communities across the country. These technologies can be integrated with physical infrastructure at the city/community level to enhance sustainability and improve efficiency of services and applications in cities and communities whose examples include intelligent transportation systems, smart energy system and smart factory. However, the integration of IoT with physical systems, also known as cyber-physical systems, makes the systems vulnerable to cyber-attacks. An example is attack on the Ukraine power grid in 2015 causing a six-hour blackout and affecting hundreds of thousands of customers. This project aims at developing scalable control algorithms to ensure the safety and optimal operation of such smart systems under potential physical and cyber attacks, which is central in achieving the vision of smart and connected communities.
