Designer topological matter

Description of the granted funding

Topological quantum materials are recently discovered phases of condensed matter where the quantum-mechanical nature of their constituents manifest in extraordinary macroscopic properties. Topological materials, consisting of topological metals, insulators and superconductors, exhibit exotic physical phenomena such as non-dissipative electronic and thermal transport, quantized conductances and exotic microscopic excitations. In this project we theoretically explore how these exotic materials can be artificially realized by combining well-understood ingredients such as superconductivity, magnetism and spin-orbit coupled materials. Furthermore, we will show that the developed designer topological structures allow novel applications in nanoelectronics and quantum technology and allow the study of exotic quantum effects of high-energy physics in a condensed matter setting.
