Microplastic pollution is urban stormwater runoffs
Description of the granted funding
In this study, the role of urban stormwater runoff as a pathway for microplastic pollution into the aquatic environment will be evaluated. In addition, hot spot areas where the microplastic load on stormwaters is particularly high will be identified and solutions are sought to control the microplastic load caused by stormwaters. The project investigates 1) the average microplastic load in urban stormwater runoffs over a period of time and give information on how the concentration and quality of microplastics vary with rain and weather conditions. in addition, 2) the effect of land use in the catchment area on concentration and quality of microplastics in stormwater runoffs will be examined as well as 3) the efficiency of common stormwater management and treatment methods to remove microplastics from stormwater runoffs.
