Resilience of Arctic terrestrial ecosystems under bioclimatic change
Description of the granted funding
The Arctic is undergoing rapid climate change which has already caused major alterations in Arctic terrestrial ecosystems. One of the most fundamental changes has been the greening of the Arctic. This increase in vegetation productivity and biomass has been observed in many remote sensing studies using coarse scale satellite data, but the local greening trends and their climatic drivers are insufficiently understood. The RESICLIM consortium will utilize state-of-the-art climate and long-term satellite data beside other environmental information over the Arctic to investigate the observed dynamics of Arctic ecosystems. The fundamental goal of the RESICLIM consortium is to produce Arctic wide maps of ecosystem resilience. Such information is urgently needed to support evidence-based policy and decision-making.
