How fit is your gut? Microbiome underlying winter adaptations in wild populations

How fit is your gut? Microbiome underlying winter adaptations in wild populations

Project description

All organisms on our planet carry microorganisms in their gut. Human studies show prominent effects of gut microbiome on our health. The role of microbiome in adaptations to variable environments in wild vertebrates is however poorly understood. We test a new hypothesis on the role of microbiome in adapting to winter conditions, with the case example of passerine birds. We study effects of temperature on microbiome, links of this variation to cold resistance and the underlying molecular mechanisms. Our international team utilizes novel molecular tools and microbiome transplant methods. The project increases our understanding on the origins of phenotypic variation and the role of microbiome in adapting to rapid environmental changes. Versatile science outreach and citizen science approaches brings our science to the public.
