Improving stormwater retention and filtration capacity of a vertical garden system by manipulating water pathway design, plant species, soil microbial community, and different soil types

Description of the granted funding

The project aims to design a vertical garden system that can alleviate stormwater stress in cities. Based on previous studies, higher efficiency of stormwater retention and filtration of this system can be achieved by modifying plant communities, soil microbial communities, soil types, and water pathways. Eventually, findings from the project will be applied to actual products in order to deliver sustainable urban stormwater management. Projektin tavoitteena on luoda malli vertikaaliselle puutarhajärjestelmälle, jonka avulla voidaan lievittää hulevesien aiheuttamia ongelmia urbaaneilla alueilla. Aiempien tutkimusten perusteella vastaavien rakenteiden kykyä pidättää ja suodattaa hulevesiä voidaan parantaa tekemällä muutoksia kasvilajeihin, maaperätyyppiin, mikrobikantaan sekä huleveden kulkureittiin. Projektin aikana tehdyt havainnot huomioidaan tuotteissa, joilla kestävämmät hulevesien hallinnan keinot jalkautetaan kaupunkeihin.
