High Performance Biocomposites

Description of the granted funding

This research focuses on bio-based polymer matrix composites. Using, as reinforcement, the natural ‘scaffold’ of cellulose in the cell wall revealed by the selective removal of hemicellulose and lignin, coupled with the creation of a matrix by monomer impregnation followed by in situ polymerization and mechanical compression, composite laminae with exceptional mechanical properties will be created. Using the thin quasi-unidirectional lamellae created through this approach and stacking them to create multi-directional laminates, formable structural biocomposites will be produced that have properties comparable with existing synthetic fiber-reinforced composites.
