Electro-coagulation electro Fenton synergy for complete mineralization of cyanotoxins in drinking water-CyanoMining

Description of the granted funding

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms have becomes a frequent occurrence due to the increased anthropogenic activities coupled with climate change. They are known to produces toxins (cyano toxins) that make up a large group of chemical compounds. These compounds differ from their molecular structure and toxicological properties. Cyanotoxins causes acute and chronic symptoms as hepatotoxicosis, peracute neurotoxicosis, gastrointestinal disturbances, respiratory and allergic reactions which can lead to fatalities. Insufficient disinfection of drinking water laden with cyanobacteria bloom is one exposure path for these toxins. Thus, necessitating the need for a practical and economical method for complete removal or reduction of the toxins from drinking water to levels compliant. Electrochemical technologies are promising in removing natural toxins due to the strong oxidation capability, easy operation, ability to convert the biological change into an electrical signal. CyanoMining project aims to assess the simultaneous use of the electro Fenton (EF) and electro coagulation (EC) processes for complete mineralization of cyanotoxins. It is hypothesised that optimizing and integrating EC and EF to a novel system, would serve as a suitable option for cyanotoxins mineralisation for small drinking water treatment systems
