Pan-valent enterovirus vaccine

Description of the granted funding

Enteroviruses (EVs) cause tremendous disease burden to humans globally, causing e.g., flaccid paralysis, meningitis and myocarditis. Out of 286 EVs, 282 EVs do not have vaccine and although traditional polio vaccines are in clinical use, polio still causes outbreaks. Traditional vaccines are not feasible against most EVs, but this can be overcome with Virus-Like Particle (VLP) vaccines by utilizing the new vaccine design and formulation we are proposing. We develop pan-valent EV vaccine protecting against all EVs. The vaccine will be ready to be translated in clinical trials and it will be cost-efficient to produce and supply so it can reach also low-income countries. The results of the project would lead to advances in vaccine, antiviral drug and diagnostic-assay development against EVs, significantly reducing the burden of EVs on health care systems in the future. This project opens possibilities to eradicate polio and prevent virus pandemics, providing enormous societal impact.
