Non-invasive assessment of human cortical language network for presurgical evaluation and research
Description of the granted funding
Mapping of cortical speech-related areas by navigated repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (nrTMS) is a highly sensitive marker for speech localization, FDA approved, and widely used in presurgical settings. However, it is currently limited by its low spatial specificity and user dependency. The objective of this project is to improve the reliability of TMS language mapping via novel technical approaches, and by increasing our understanding of the brain's language network as a whole. Our goal is to increase the specificity of non-invasive language mapping to a level where it could in the future fully replace the current gold standard, i.e., mapping during the surgery while the patient is awake, which is both time consuming and includes risks for the patient.
