Electrical impedance tomography – a novel method for improved diagnostics of stroke
Description of the granted funding
We have developed a novel imaging technology for bedside monitoring of brain status of acute stroke patients. Our monitoring solution is based on Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT), and it is designed for on-line detection of growth and occurrence of intracerebral hemorrhages in acutely ill stroke patients. Our new technology has already shown great promise in physically realistic simulation studies and in laboratory setup, but it has not yet been tested on clinical patient data. This project aims to solve the remaining mathematical and engineering research questions, transferring the new monitoring technology to a clinically usable level. We also aim to undertake a pilot clinical trial for demonstrating the new technology for the first time with real patient data. Upon success of the clinical pilot, the new technology would be ready for commercialization R&D, and we are confident that it can lead to a significant societal and economic impact through improved treatment of stroke.
