Harmonizing and integrating radar-based approaches for monitoring aerial biodiversity
Description of the granted funding
Although the airspace is increasingly recognized as an essential habitat for trillions of birds and insects, aerial habitats are poorly monitored and largely absent from policy. We will develop standardized, automated monitoring of aerial biodiversity by integrating biodiversity information from different radar systems. We will demonstrate the capacity for biodiversity monitoring with spatially explicit proof-of-concept studies for birds and insects and develop open-access tools tailored for specific stakeholders. We will develop innovative research software tools that support the collection, harmonization, visualization, analysis, and integration of biological data from small-scale and weather radars across Europe. Finally, our project will contribute to alleviating the increasing human-wildlife conflicts in a crowded airspace by providing stakeholders with urgently needed tools that indicate areas of current and potential future conflicts and guide the design of mitigation measures.
