Innovating transnational aquatic biodiversity monitoring using high-throughput DNA tools and automated image recognition

Description of the granted funding

DNAquaIMG, is transforming freshwater biodiversity monitoring with cutting-edge molecular and automated image recognition techniques. This interdisciplinary team, spanning 11 countries, combines DNA metabarcoding and image-based methods to provide more comprehensive biodiversity insights. DNAquaIMG's goal is to harmonize and implement these methods within the European Water Framework Directive, contributing to both ecological status assessments and transnational biodiversity monitoring. With a focus on invertebrates and diatoms, DNAquaIMG aims to enhance ecosystem management, align with the European Green Deal, and support UN post-2020 targets.
