Developing Community-Based Air Quality and Energy Efficient Framework for Sustainable School Buildings in Finland (SustainSchool)

Acronym

SustainSchool

Description of the granted funding

SustainSchool presents an ambitious project that aims to optimize energy consumption and indoor environment quality (IEQ) for interconnected school buildings in Finland. It uses cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, multi-objective optimisation, and high-performance computing techniques, as well as novel multi-agent based algorithms to achieve optimal control of IEQ while minimizing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. By treating school buildings as a community, SustainSchool enables us to understand the interrelated behaviour of teachers and students, school schedules, and building energy systems' impacts on IEQ and energy consumption in ways never did before. It also initiates the advancement of explainable AI and reinforcement learning algorithm and the use of these advanced techniques to predict respiratory viruses in school buildings, creating more resilient and responsive schools that can combat climate change.
