European Warning and Advisory System on Vegetation Fires and Smoke Pollution (VFSP-WASE)
Description of the granted funding
Vegetation fires is one of the top-level concerns related to climate change. They can severely damage environment, reduce biodiversity, and have a highly detrimental effect on society by destroying property and taking lives. Fires are also one of the largest sources of particulate matter and toxic gases impacting regional air quality, human health, and environment over large areas. Recognizing the necessity of collective international efforts and concerted actions, a group of ex-perts came up with a suggestion of a global network of Vegetation Fires and Smoke Pollution Warning Advisory Centers under the WMO Global Atmos-pheric Watch programme. The overall goal of the current proposal is to combine the cutting-edge research of ACCC flagship with Finnish and European expertise and lay down the scientific and operational foundation for the Vegetation Fire and Smoke Pollution Warning and Advisory System for Europe, VFSP-WASE.
