Space-based service for greenhouse gas and air pollution hotspot emission monitoring – Pilot for Africa (SHARP)
Description of the granted funding
During the last 20 years satellite observations have revolutionized the way we monitor air quality and greenhouse gases. Satellite data are particularly useful in places where no reliable emission information is available, and/or the ground-based measurement networks are sparse. In this project, we build a web-based service for monitoring and sharing information on anthropogenic greenhouse gas and air pollution emission hotspots in Africa. The special target areas of the project are mining, energy sector, and oil & gas industry. The web-service will be built via co-creation with users and stakeholders. We plan to collaborate with several Finnish companies, international organizations, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, and with the sister institutes of Finnish Meteorological Institute in Africa.
