Vascularized immunocompetent cortical organoids as a model to study ischemic stroke

Description of the granted funding

Acute neurodegenerative diseases, like stroke, burden the world. In Finland, 20,000 suffer from stroke annually, mainly ischemic strokes due to brain blood flow blockage. Insufficient models hinder stroke research. This study develops vascular immunocompetent cortical organoids (viCOs) modeling human brain. The objectives include generating viCOs, implanting them into mice for maturation, and ischemic stroke studies. Preliminary data shows the successful viCO generation and their integration into the mouse. This platform deepens understanding of stroke and may identify treatments for patients.
