Digital Twin of Boreal Forest Structure with Remote Sensing and Forest Inventories (DigiTForest)
Description of the granted funding
Anthropogenic climate change and loss of biodiversity pose a major threat to the Earth's forests which cover approximately one third of the total land surface of the planet. There is a strong international commitment to stop the loss of biodiversity: for example, the European Union aims to protect one fifth of its land surface. However, effective conservation efforts need accurate knowledge of which areas to prioritize. The DigiTForest-project carried out at Natural Resources Institute Finland aims to develop methods for accurate mapping of biodiversity variables using remote sensing data and ground measurements. The project utilizes big data, and advanced methods in statistics and artificial intelligence to provide accurate maps which capture elements which are crucial biodiversity indicators. This project focuses on the boreal zone covering most of, e.g., Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Canada, and has collaborators in and data from these four countries.
