Utilizing food purchase data as a novel tool to investigate risk factors associated with the onset and progression of cardi-ometabolic diseases

Description of the granted funding

The purpose of this study is to investigate how our food purchases relate to our health. We invite biobank donors to participate in this study and ask for their permission to use their food purchase data, which automatically accumulates in retailer's database, for this research, and to combine with information available in the Finnish health registers and biobanks. By developing statistical and machine learning models, we study how food purchase behavior relates to our cardiometabolic health and if we can use food purchases data to predict if someone has an increased risk of developing cardiometabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease. This project will advance our understanding of the genetic and food behavior-related drivers behind the development of cardiometabolic diseases to pave the way for new prevention and intervention strategies.
