Genomics of high-latitude parallel adaptation

Description of the granted funding

Survival in the north is challenging for organisms due to the region's harsh environmental conditions and often requires genetic adaptation. This study investigates the genetic basis of adaptation to the north using multiple plant populations independently adapted to high latitudes. To do so, the study combines state-of-the-art sequencing and computational methods. The aim is to identify genetic regions contributing to high-latitude adaptation and investigate if the same genetic loci are repeatedly used in this adaptation. Understanding the mechanisms of adaptation can for instance be used in plant breeding. In addition, knowledge of the genetic background of adaptation is an important factor to be considered in predicting future population distributions.
