GreenHouse gas dynamics of Urban Green Space
Acronym
GHUGS
Description of the granted funding
Cities worldwide are interested in the potential of urban nature to provide ecosystem services, such as offsetting some greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. So far, the main research has focused on CO2 sequestration whereas the exchange of other GHGs is widely ignored. GHUGS investigates the role of different GHGs and their sources and sinks in urban nature. We will collect observations in different cities and utilize data from collaborators. We will perform experiments to find practices that improve carbon sequestration and decrease GHG emissions. With the observations and additional satellite data, we will test if a widely used process-based model can represent urban nature, and modify and calibrate it if needed. The project will provide a comprehensive understanding of the atmosphere-plant-soil GHG dynamics in urban areas. It will provide evidence-based recommendations for climate-smart practices of urban green space, also in future climate.
