Fast AI-assisted Space Environment pRediction
Description of the granted funding
Space weather refers to the conditions in space causing harm to technologies and human health. Space weather is a major risk to the green and digital transfer, because many societally critical services and commodities directly depend on the conditions in space. Compared to terrestrial weather, space weather occurs in much bigger volume, is controlled by complex non-thermal physics, and is measured by much fewer instruments. Due to this complexity, the current operational space weather models use simplistic physical approximations that miss many fundamental phenomena in space physics. Vlasiator is the world's most accurate space environment simulation that solves space physics using the ion-kinetic description and is run on the world's largest supercomputers. This project builds on recent breakthroughs in machine learning. Advanced machine learning methods enable the world's first ion-kinetic space weather forecast model with accuracy on par with Vlasiator.
