Surface chemistry of realistic atmospheric particles and droplets investigated with novel X-ray methods

Description of the granted funding

This project will use the world's brightest light source at MAX IV Laboratory in Sweden (https://www.maxiv.lu.se) to investigate the surfaces of nano- and micrometer sized particles and droplets in Earth's atmosphere. Our experiments will provide the first direct clues about the chemical compounds present at the surface of particles and droplets and the chemical reactions that may occur here due to the presence of water vapor and other gases. These results will give us entirely new information about how particles and droplets are formed and in turn transform the atmosphere and have the potential to change our understanding of their roles in climate and air pollution. This has significant implications for how society responds to climate change, air pollution, and its possible health effects. The project is based at the Center for Atmospheric Research at the University of Oulu (https://www.oulu.fi/en/center-atmospheric-research).
