Social determinants of neurodevelopmental disorders and their consequences within families

Description of the granted funding

Neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly ADHD, are increasing diagnosed among children. Families and schools play a key role in referrals to medical evaluation, whereas access to and organization of care differ between areas. Characteristics at all these levels of society may also affect the effects that neurodevelopmental disorders have on children and their parents. This project combines the research traditions of social sciences, public health, and medical sciences to examine the social determinants of children's neurodevelopmental diagnoses and their psychological and social consequences within families. The project uses register-based and survey data from different countries and implements advanced study designs and statistics methods. The produced new evidence on social inequalities in neurodevelopmental diagnoses and their consequences is highly relevant for the optimal allocation of scarce healthcare and service resources.
