Advanced Laser Scanning for Enhanced Wood Quality Mapping and Value Chain Optimization (Forest2Factory)

Description of the granted funding

The FOREST2FACTORY project is based on the results of the Academy of Finland's Quality4Trees project, where we developed the use of 3D point cloud data in measuring the quality of trees. In the FOREST2FACTORY, we demonstrate the applicability of our results in an industrial environment and analyze the resulting costs and benefits in the wood processing value chain. The aim of the project is to pilot 1) the utilization of 3D point clouds in the measurement of wood quality data on an industrial scale, 2) the traceability of harvested wood from the forest to the factory, and 3) to produce a modeling framework for predicting wood quality at different scale levels. The project is implemented with industrial partners who provide operational data. The project also develops the metsäkanta.fi forest information system. Large-scale information about wood quality enables a technological leap, where the information itself has significant value in promoting the creation of new innovative services.
