Promoting Linguistic Justice with Social Welfare Comics (ProLingJust)
Description of the granted funding
What if a social welfare document was a comic – would the content be easier to understand? In the Graphic Justice project, we made Finnish comics about service descriptions (meal service and safety phone service) for older people. Now we make new versions of these comics e.g. in Sami, Romani and Russian. The existing comics may not suit all language groups because cultural factors may influence the acceptability of the images or the environments may feel alien to the readers. Therefore, it is necessary to gain information on cultural details in order to change the comics. Our project aims to develop clear communication for the aging population. Our methods include interviews, workshops and co-development in collaboration with two NGOs and of the welfare services counties in Finland. More information: research.tuni.fi/sarjis.
