Description of the granted funding

Finnish road maintenance debt increases 0.1 billion € annually and is currently 2.5 B€. Most of the main road network was built in the 1960s, and requires thorough maintenance. The common causes of pavement deterioration and degradation are overloading, adverse climatic conditions such as frost, seepage, improper or poor road surface drainage, lack of proper road maintenance, lack of proper design and improper construction material. According to the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, there does not exist any automated technique for distress mapping. Thus, the core idea of the proposal Towards Automatic Road Inspection is to improve previous RCF project @Quality4Roads technologies to create prototype towards a future operational, cost-effective mobile laser scanning sensor and software processing solutions for automatic distress mapping mitigating the above mentioned gaps both in research and in practice.
