Improving K-12 students' conceptual understanding through artificial socio-cognitive conflict

Description of the granted funding

Generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, have emerged into learning and teaching. The use of these tools necessitate strong conceptual understanding so that students can differentiate correct and false information that the tools produce. However, students' performance in science is decreasing and individual differences are increasing. ASCO-project improves students' conceptual understanding by taking into account their individual differences. The ASCO-idea is to use AI agent to create socio-cognitive conflict among learners and AI agent. AI agent then helps students to resolve the conflict. When AI agent is configurated to take students' prior knowledge, beliefs, and learning trace into consideration, students will get meaningful and solvable conflicts. Thus, ASCO-project will produce evidence-based AI-enhanced learning technologies to improve learning outcomes and decrease individual differences in learning.
