Partially Integrated Worldview Education and Dialogue in a Diverse Finnish Society: A Classroom Study in Helsinki Capital Area

Description of the granted funding

The study explores the impacts of Partially Integrated Worldview Education (PIWE) and dialogue in Finnish comprehensive schools, addressing challenges in Worldview Education (WE) highlighted by Salmenkivi & Åhs (2022), who call for change and new research in Finland. Using mixed methods, the study investigates the nature of dialogue during PIWE lessons and explores how pupils perceive dialogues’ relevance and nature in the context of the Finnish comprehensive school. The theoretical framework of this study is grounded in Gert Biesta's re-conceptualization of Bildung, focusing on the communicational aspects of dialogue. Data collection includes pupil surveys and classroom video observations, analyzed using theory-based content analyses and Student Interaction Network Analysis. As part of Project ODYSSEUS (Lipiäinen et al. 2024) at the University of Helsinki, this study contributes to ongoing academic research on WE, providing insights into PIWE’s development and impacts to WE. The findings of this study are expected to offer crucial and useful insights for educators and scholars in WE globally, and policymakers as well.
