Hearing enables accurate and rapid perception of the environment for quick situational analysis, for example, in dangerous situations. This project develops methods to make radiation or sound that is inaudible to the ear detectable and localizable using spatial hearing. A head-mounted device analyzes and shifts the waves to the audible range and auralizes them with correct perception of source direction. Methods are being developed for specific applications such as sonar, announcement systems for the blind, underwater listening, and detecting sources of ionizing radiation. The technology benefits the blind and professionals in hazardous environments.
