Phosphorus (P) is an important plant nutrient that is expensive due to its limited natural resources and energy-intensive manufacturing processes. Sewage sludge and digested sludge contain significant amounts of P, which can be extracted and used as fertilizer. Our recently developed P extraction technique (PExt) recovers P from sludge and produces mineral fertilizers. However, it has only been tested in batch tests and needs further development as a continuous process to ensure scalable.
