Efficient Reference Data Capture with Accurate Tree Positions at Individual Tree Level for Forest Plots
Description of the granted funding
Measuring the position of each tree within each reference plot is very time-consuming and laborious, but it is increasingly needed when moving towards individual-tree based forest inventories for both Stand Level Forest Inventory conducted by the Finnish Forest Centre and National Forest Inventory (NFI). The EATP4Plots project will advance in developing an accurate and efficient measure for this target by using ultra-wideband (UWB) technology. Our primary goal is to develop a single UWB base station-based prototype, which is sufficient to improve the measurement efficiency for the positions of trees by up to 80% and allow for a five-fold test measurement at the same expense compared to conventional field measures e.g. Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Total Station (TS) and Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS), and thus reduce the whole inventory cost.
