Intelligent battery management protocols: real-time impedance-based state estimation methods for lifetime maximization of Li-ion batteries and applications

Description of the granted funding

This academy researcher project aims to maximize the achievable lifetime of Li-ion batteries and applications by intelligent management protocols which are based on real-time battery impedance monitoring technology and novel impedance-based state estimation algorithms. These methods will offer higher accuracy and consistency compared to the available traditional protocols which allow the BMS to better optimize the battery's use and consequently maximize its life in its primary application (i.e., first-life application), such as in electric vehicles. In addition, the methods guarantee that adequate health information of the battery is also available when the battery is retired, allowing second-life use of the battery with which the lifetime and sustainability of the Li-ion batteries can be significantly increased even further. This highly innovative project has a high scientific, economic, and societal impact with the potential to produce ground-breaking research results.
