Tracking Reading Proficiency in Finnish School Children: A Comprehensive Approach to Component Skill Assessment and Development

Description of the granted funding

Recent PISA results reveal a concerning decline in reading skills in Finland, with growing disparities linked to gender and linguistic background. Our project tackles these challenges by developing new assessment tools for key reading and self-regulation skills, including vocabulary, morphology, grammar, reading motivation and strategies. We are tracking the development of these skills and their relation to reading comprehension in thousands of native and non-native Finnish pupils from grade 1 to 9. Additionally, we aim to provide personalized interventions for students struggling with specific skills. Central to our project is using the ViLLE learning platform, which enables us to collect data from 25,000 students annually. The project provides educators with free, research-based tools to monitor reading progress and support pupils with reading challenges. It is thus well suited to reverse the decline in reading skills while bridging gaps related to gender and home language background
