Generative AI and Digital Solutions: Enhancing Effectiveness and Productivity of Healthcare Services

Description of the granted funding

Finland's aging population poses major challenges for healthcare systems and economic sustainability. The GAINS project investigates how digital services and generative artificial intelligence (AI) can enhance healthcare productivity, accessibility, and cost-effectiveness, while also addressing ethical, legal, and societal risks. Using Finland's unique register-based data, large-scale randomized trials, and multidisciplinary methods, the project produces evidence on the real-world impacts of digital and AI tools. Key focus areas include primary care, digital clinics, diagnostic efficiency, documentation automation, and responsible technology adoption. Collaboration with policymakers, wellbeing services counties, healthcare providers, and international organizations ensures that research supports sustainable healthcare reform, drives economic growth, and helps position Finland as a global leader in responsible digital health and AI innovation.
