?High-value products from forest resources: a cascade pathway to biochar and biopigments for climate and soil

Description of the granted funding

The research project develops and demonstrates a cascading valorization concept for Finnish forest biomass into two high-value and climate-relevant product streams: functionalized biochar and biopigments. The project covers the full value chain from feedstock sourcing to end-use testing, combining scientific development, pilot-scale demonstration, ecological assessment, and economic evaluation. The project is framed within the ongoing transformation of Finland's forest and bioeconomy sectors, where carbon neutrality goals, biodiversity protection, and comprehensive sustainability criteria are reshaping the use of forest biomass. The chosen feedstocks consist exclusively of forest resources with no impact on primary wood harvesting or land-use change.
