AI-supported advanced imaging for Geo
Description of the granted funding
The built environment consumes a lot of natural resources and causes about 1/3 of Finland's CO2 emissions. The highest uncertainty in construction work is related to the ground conditions, which increases this negative impact. To develop more reliable and accurate ground investigations methods, a multidisciplinary team has been assembled. The aim is to combine micro-level information on minerals, chemical elements and microbes with the physical characteristics of the soil to determine its mechanical properties. In addition, the aim is to use micro-level information to determine the heterogenous structures (layers)of the soil more accurately. The final goal is to determine the mechanical properties of soils quickly using optics that cover a wide light spectrum. The work is intended to be carried out through an extensive experimental program that utilizes the advanced research capabilities of Tampere University and GTK in geotechnics, geology, microscopy, imaging and microbiology.
