The Silent Backlash: The Political Economy of Anti-Gender Politics in Finland (SIBA)

Description of the granted funding

Weakening of gender equality is associated with the strengthening of anti-gender politics. SIBA provides a novel understanding of anti-gender politics by analyzing its ideational and political-economic foundations. It pays attention to both extreme and rejected anti-gender politics and to more silent and acceptable gender conservatism critical to ongoing welfare state reform. By investigating broader gendered, racialized, and class-based political-economic foundations of anti-gender politics SIBA paves way for political imagination and resistance. SIBA provides an in-depth empirical analysis of anti-gender politics in Finland. It aims to show how anti-gender politics is deeply connected with neoliberalism and contribute to ongoing state reform. Analyzing these aspects provides new insight on how anti-gender politics have been incorporated in Finland. SIBA uses a wide data of policy documents, interviews and participant observation, analyzed with qualitative and quantitative methods.
