REsilient and Accessible power system with Large shares of Solar energy (RealSolar)

Description of the granted funding

The quest for carbon neutrality increases the share of renewable energy in society. The RealSolar project investigates solutions for how renewable energy, and solar power in particular, can be added to the Finnish energy system in a way that supports resilience and equality. We develop new methods for estimating the potential of solar power in northern conditions. Through multidisciplinary research, we identify the diverse impacts of the energy transition on electricity sufficiency, land use and the Nordic energy system. We bring different social interests from solar power together and provide answers based on our research. Our goal in the project is to support households' and housing companies' equal access to the benefits of renewable energy and contribute to the formation of just energy communities. In addition to financial profitability, we take into account the impact of solar power production on the resilience of the national energy system and Finland as a whole.
