INVEST Register Data Hub

Abbreviation

InReg

Infrastructure description

InReg specializes in the following areas of register-based research under the themes of the INVEST-flagship: planning and compilation of new thematic data sets (data projects), handling of the application process, acquiring updates to existing data sets, content standardization, creating metadata, coordination of researches and researcher training.

Scientific description

Register data made available through InReg can be used for researches under the themes of the INVEST-flagship: skills development and wellbeing among children and adolescents, inequality, and welfare state studies. Currently available total Finnish population data sets include information, inter alia, on the following topics: education (e.g., educational choices, grades and completed degrees), labour market participation, housing conditions, immigration, incomes and wealth, use of welfare services (e.g., receipt of different types of social benefits), and demographic and other types of life course events (e.g., births, deaths, marriages, cohabitations, family dissolutions). Register data enable reconstructing individual life courses in multiple time points and identifying family members and close relatives. Register data can be used, for instance, in individual- and family-level analysis, in sibling comparisons, in longitudinal analysis, and in analyzing trends over time and regional differences. Data projects administered by InReg will be later supplemented with healthcare register data and with genetic information from smaller samples. Register data can be linked with survey data and other types of data under certain conditions.
