Abstract
Wind power is, compared to many other emerging energy sources, already a mature technology that has been harnessed by humans for millennia. The Sun is the enabler of this power source. The Sun first heats the Earth’s surface, which then heats the air above—creating density differences—which finally produces wind in the atmosphere and makes wind energy systems viable, over land and sea. Wind power has many environmental advantages over the use of fossil fuels. It is seen as one of the key solutions to mitigate climate change. During the past decade the use of wind power has expanded rapidly. Relatively short construction times, reducing installation and operating costs and increased generation per MW installed decreasing costs per kilowatt hour, have made wind power a thriving technology on the road to carbon neutral future. It is estimated that wind and solar together will produce about half of world’s electricity by 2030.
