Abstract

The factors which affect the corrosion behaviour of materials in the deep sea environment are studied in this work. The corrosion behaviour of three aluminum alloys were examined in simulated deep sea conditions. The test results indicated that the pitting corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys decreased as depth increased, but the effect depended much on the alloy. The deterioration in corrosion resistance is caused by the changes in the chemical composition of the sea water and the hydrostatic pressure.
