Abstract

The intention of this report is to give a picture of existing digital radio systems as well as of future systems under development. The emphasis is put on systems based on European standards and on research done in Europe. The following systems are introduced: · GSM, a second generation public mobile system offering speech, data and supplementary services with basically global coverage. · DCS1800, a variant of the GSM standards offering more capacity in urban areas by using a higher frequency band. · TETRA, a private mobile radio system providing high reliability and short set-up times needed by emergency applications. · DECT, an air interface specification for applications such as cordless telephones and RLANs (Radio Local Area Networks). · spread spectrum RLAN systems, enable wireless connections to LANs (Local Area Networks) and are typically compatible with the commonly used LAN software products. · UMTS, a future mobile system capable of responding to the increasing requirements of mobile users. The aim of UMTS is to offer a wide range of high quality services to mobile users. Should be in operation around the year 2000. · FPLMTS, a future mobile system providing world-wide coverage with basically the same goals as UMTS. · HIPERLAN, a standard for the wireless extension of fixed LANs. · MBS, a future mobile system concept extending the range of broadband services to mobile users. The systems are divided into three categories: low data rate, medium data rate and high data rate systems. The first category is limited to 64 kbit/s to which the first three systems belong. The next four systems are grouped to the medium data rate category, and the last two systems to the high data rate category. The border between the medium data rate and high data rate systems is put on 2 Mbit/s.
